Module #3 Assignment: Enhancing Your Visualization with Color and Vector Graphics

Image
For this refined map, I focused on using color to make the information easier to read and understand. I chose a color scale that moves from lighter to darker shades to represent changes in values, which helps the viewer quickly identify patterns and differences across the map. While the colors improve overall readability, I recognize that I could have pushed the contrast further and added clearer labels to make certain areas stand out even more. Rather than adding entirely new vector elements, I focused on refining the existing shapes after converting the map to vector format. Adjusting these vectorized regions allowed for cleaner edges and more consistent coloring, which helped make the map feel more structured and intentional. Gestalt principles influenced how the map is visually organized. I used proximity to keep related regions and labels visually connected, and contrast to establish a sense of visual hierarchy. These principles helped the map remain readable overall, even ...

Module 2: My Geographic Map of Florida Public Libraries

Image
My Geographic Map of Florida Public Libraries   https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Mw9nLEDHu06LhY-WkIRtsHDIhvNnP_Hdp3wnGD7Cb3Y/edit?usp=sharing The data used for this map comes from a publicly available listing Florida public libraries and their street addresses. I used it and created my own google sheet. Challenges Faced One challenge I encountered was ensuring Tableau correctly recognized the address field for geocoding. Initially, some points did not appear on the map, which required verifying that addresses were complete and properly formatted.   Reflection  To improve clarity and insight, I would apply additional visual grammar principles such as color and proximity . Using color scales to represent different cities or regions would help viewers quickly identify geographic patterns. The principle of proximity allows nearby libraries to visually group together, making regional clusters more noticeable. Similarity through consistent point s...

Visualization Analysis: Radar Images of Heavy Rainfall in Milwaukee

Image
Selected Visualization The visualization I chose shows two weather radar images highlighting heavy rainfall and flash flood warnings in the Northwest Milwaukee area on August 9–10, 2025. The radar uses different colors to show how intense the storm is, with reds and oranges representing the heaviest rainfall. Arrows are included to show the direction of the storm’s movement, and boxed warning areas make it clear which locations are most at risk. Source: National Weather Service radar imagery   Analysis and Judgment I believe this visualization was created by a human designer, not generated by AI. The added arrows, warning boxes, and labels show intentional design choices meant to quickly communicate important information during a severe weather event. These elements help viewers understand where the storm is moving and which areas are experiencing the most danger, which is especially important during flash flood situations. The visualization also follows standard weathe...
